Thank you for purchasing CouchDB in Action through MEAP, the Manning Early Access Program.

It has been a long time since the last update to the MEAP edition of CouchDB in Action, and we owe you an explanation! Writing technology books is a challenging process, and things don’t always go smoothly. Rapid changes to the CouchDB product and equally-rapid changes in the demands on our authors have resulted in no real progress for several months. We’re now taking a careful look at this project to decide whether we should move forward based on the existing content, start again from scratch, or cancel the book.

Translation: since no one has been working on this book for more than half a year, we just might have to refund you. But that hurts!

För vems fel ska det annars vara i detta fall. Grisuppfödarna själva kanske? Nä de är bara offer. Tyngda av sina förtroendeuppdrag i grisuppfödarföreningar (eller vad det nu är) har de inte tid att titta till sina kotlettfabriker. “Tekniskt fel” får vi veta. Jaha, ja då så, då måste det ju vara regeringens fel eftersom regeringen inte skickar ut tillräckligt många inspektörer (poliser) som inspekterar verksamheten. Avgå genast, Reinfeldt!

Ygemans perspektiv går lika bra att tillämpa på andra brott. En människa mördas, det fanns inte tillräckligt många poliser (inspektörer) på plats för att förhindra det. Alltså: regeringens fel. Avgå igen!

Sen, om man vore lite konspiratoriskt lagd, skulle man ju kunna tro att Ygeman fortfarande är förbannad för att alliansen la ned den fantastiska Djurskyddsmyndigheten. Ni vet, den där med skattemedel finansierade lekstugan som kom fram till att vi måste förbjuda fiske med levande agn, för “det gör nog ont i maskarna när man hänger upp dem på en krok”.

Men nej, så dålig förlorare kan väl karln ändå inte vara. Det måste vara på det andra sättet. Brott som begås under borgerlig regering är regeringens fel, för de har säkert sparat in på något som (s) minsann inte skulle ha gjort.

Somewhat hastily I upgraded to 10.6 and that broke some things with my installed ports. And CouchDB wouldn’t compile – oh the horror! Here’s what I did to fix my port installation and get latest CouchDB in trunk build and run again. And failed…

First, I just renamed /opt to /opt.old to start from fresh after noting that my first attemtp to just rely on existing ports didn’t work. Then:

svn co http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/base/
cd base
./configure
make
sudo make install
sudo port -v selfupdate

I already had /opt/local/bin and /opt/local/sbin in my path so port is found immediately. And now when port was working again:

sudo port install spidermonkey
sudo port install icu
sudo port install erlang

And then had dinner. Installing erlang requires a lot of other stuff so prepare for a couple of wanks a long break while computer burns. Returned later with high hopes but no… some f-cker called libsdl doesn’t build. Hopped along to a ticket about it and read all about a patch that remedies this. That took it a bit further but then there were even more problems, with patches on files I didn’t even find.

So screw macports for now! Wait ’til it’s officially supported. I got erlang from the mothership instead and built it as per this instruction.

And now, finally, I could step into my downloaded couchdb source and:

./bootstrap && ./configure
make dev
./utils/run

And saw the so wanted

Apache CouchDB 0.10.0a805490 (LogLevel=info) is starting.

On the output. Hooray! But…
